About a week ago I saw the tom turkey (Meleagris gallapavo) again. It was in the early evening before dusk. He was down in the woods alternately pecking on the ground and walking around displaying his full tail feathers. I did not have my binoculars, so I could not get the details of his tail. According to the Cornell Univ. Ornithology Lab, turkeys “are one of only two domesticated birds originating in the New World (www.cornell.edu). The article goes on to state that turkeys were taken to Europe by the Spanish, and brought back to America as domesticated birds by colonists. Turkeys that sport brown-tipped tails are original natives, while those with white-tipped tails are descendants of the ones brought from the Old World (ibid.)

The neighbor is going turkey hunting soon. I hope that this big gobbler does not get taken. I’d like to get a picture of him.
