Bluets

bluetswmk.jpg This is a clump of bluets (Houstonia caerulea) growing in the McCreary Cemetery. This is a privately-owned cemetery that contains the graves of the famous bordermen Lewis Wetzel and his brother Martin, their mother, and other relatives and descendants. It is bordered on the east by New Vrindaban land.

The land separating the cemetery from the present community fund-raising headquarters used to be just a ravine filled with mature trees, with a ground cover of vinca bordering the county road. Some years back a road was bulldozed through to community-owned land near Wheeling Creek. However, the road does not seem to have had much, if any, usage.

The fund-raising building is what started out as the nursery school for children under five and later became the elementary school. The ground outside of the wire fence is littered with remnants of children’s playthings: a torn stuffed doll, pieces of plastic toys. In spite of all of this trash, clumps of spring beauties (Claytonia virginica) are in blossom.
