Bee Crisis
Today’s New York Times has a front-page article (online) about the mysterious disappearance of innumerable bees. This is just one of many articles that has been written lately upon this subject. However, this is the first one that I’ve read that states the problem is not limited to the United States.
For those who think cell phone towers and radiation is a factor, it is interesting to note that the accompanying map shows that WV is not one of the states reporting the “colony collapse” syndrome. West Virginia does not have cell phone service in much of the state.
I recommend that everyone read the book The Forgotten Pollinators, by Buchman and Nabhan. Although we are dependent upon honeybees to pollinate many of our food sources, there are wasps, mason bees, and other creatures who pollinate as well.
“Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
That swarm dilating round the perfect trees.”
–Robert Frost (A Prayer in Spring)
