A couple of weeks ago I went for a walk in the woods and spied the shell of a nut on a rock. It was a half of a hickory nut shell and had a small hole drilled on on one side. A tiny spider had taken up residence in it. I knew that it was from a hickory tree but did not find the tree until a few days ago, by examining both leaves and bark.

Circa 1982-1983 there were three shagbark hickories in the pasture behind the Barn at Bohulaban. One autumn I gathered the nuts and put them in homemade fudge. The trees died years ago and were cut down.

There are several other shagbarks in the vicinity of New Vrindaban. One is on the back road between the Rose farmhouse and Tripad’s. One or two are on the hill behind Tripad’s, possibly on his land. There is another behind the fund-raising building.
