Memories of Nature
As you pause to reflect on the meaning of the day today, you might be drawn to family memories. What childhood memories do you have of nature? What interactions with the natural world did you have while growing up?
I remember digging on the beaches of New England, playing with (harmless) jellyfish, looking for sand dollars and shells, examining seaweed. I remember chasing lightning bugs and making liquid concoctions with bright mountain ash berries in them. I remember building forts with sumac leaf roofs. I remember playing with the Chinese lantern flowers and hostas in our yard. I remember waterside exploration, “darning needles,” frogs and toads. I remember picking blueberries with my family.
As I watch three cottontail rabbits graze in our yard, I hope that everyone takes the opportunity to reflect on the importance of children’s exposure to positive experiences with nature. We need to enable such interaction for children in our care, and advocate for all others, so that they may develop an affection for the natural world and a desire to grow in knowledge of their environment.
